Concern As Court of Appeal Goes Sluggish Towards Nnamdi Kanu's Bail Hearing

Concern has been raised over the slow pace of proceedings at the Court of Appeal regarding the case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

It is on public record that the detained IPOB leader has fulfilled all legal requirements for his appeal. His legal team has filed his brief of argument, a motion for accelerated hearing, and a bail application before the Court of Appeal.

Despite completing his own side of the filings, the Federal Government has not filed its reply brief. In addition, the court is yet to fix a date to hear either the substantive appeal or the bail application.

The development has led to growing concern among observers who describe the delay as unjust. They argue that personal liberty is a fundamental right and that when the main appeal is stalled by the prosecution's inaction, the bail application should be treated as high-priority.

Legal sources note that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in custody while his bail application is yet to be heard, a situation they say raises questions about the right to be heard within a reasonable time.

According to the statement circulating on Sunday, "To be sure, keeping Mazi Nnamdi Kanu incarcerated without hearing his bail application amounts to a violation of his right to be heard within a reasonable time."

The Court of Appeal is now being urged to act swiftly and list the bail application for urgent hearing, given that the main appeal appears to have been stalled by the failure to file a reply.

As of press time, no hearing date has been announced.
