UPDATE: Families of 37 Men Who Died in NSCDC Custody Demand Independent Autopsy, Compensation

Following our earlier report on the death of 37 young men inside a crowded cell of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State, families of the victims have intensified calls for justice.

The 37 men were arrested on suspicion of illegal gold mining and were found dead on Thursday inside the NSCDC holding cell in Minna. On Saturday, grieving families demanded immediate justice as government announced an independent panel to probe the incident.

New developments on Sunday show that families are no longer just demanding a probe — they are now insisting on independent autopsies to determine the real cause of death, public release of detention records, and compensation.

The call has been backed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who in a statement said: “Thirty-seven lives mattered. Thirty-seven families are grieving. Thirty-seven Nigerians entered government custody alive and never returned home. We demand the truth. We demand accountability.”

The group demanded that the identities of the 37 victims be released and that officers found culpable be prosecuted.

Similarly, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called for a total review of NSCDC detention practices.
