Military Exhumes Slain Imo Community Leader as Security Operations Intensify Near Owerri

Troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade in Owerri, operating under Operation Udo Ka and Operation Eastern Sanity II, have exhumed the remains of a missing community leader, Chief Ibe Anyadu, from a shallow grave in the Umudike Forest. The recovery followed intelligence-driven operations and interrogations of suspects recently apprehended in connection with attacks on security personnel in the

area. During questioning, one of the suspects confessed to participating in the abduction and murder of Chief Anyadu—a respected leader from Aggah in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area—before guiding military units, local vigilantes, and family members to the hidden forest camp. The Commander of the Joint Task Force South-East, Major General Oluremi Fadairo, confirmed that the suspects will be fully prosecuted under federal law as joint forces continue efforts to neutralize armed criminal networks operating in the region.

The military breakthrough comes alongside ongoing security investigations within the Owerri metropolis following a recent explosion along Old Nekede Road in Owerri West. Explosive Ordnance Disposal units of the Imo State Police Command have maintained a tight security perimeter around the Lakeside Hotel vicinity where the blast occurred inside a drainage channel, claiming the lives of two scrap metal scavengers. While authorities report that the immediate area is contained, the incident has prompted heightened vigilance across urban centers and neighboring communities, with security agencies urging the public to report suspicious activities.

Concurrently, residents across parts of Owerri West, particularly surrounding the Umuguma Federal Housing Estate, are appealing for emergency state interventions to address severe municipal flooding and road degradation. Recent torrential downpours have overwhelmed local drainage infrastructure, causing structural blockages and disrupting daily commercial transportation. On the legislative front, efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure serving the state capital advanced as the Federal College of Nursing Bill for Imo State passed key readings in the National Assembly, aiming to expand tertiary health education and medical service capacity for the broader Owerri division.
