Imo State Unveils Women, Peace, and Security Action Plan Amid Regional Security Operations
The Imo State Government has officially launched its landmark Women, Peace, and Security Action Plan spanning 2026 to 2030, establishing a localized domestic compliance framework in Nigeria's South-East geopolitical zone. Designed to foster long-term stability across the state, the strategic framework—spearheaded by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in collaboration with Alliances for Africa—focuses on increasing women’s participation in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and local governance initiatives. State officials emphasized that integrating women into community security networks and decision-making bodies is essential for sustained regional development, noting that the roadmap aligns with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 while directly addressing localized gender vulnerabilities and peace priorities in rural areas.
This policy milestone comes as security forces intensify operations across the state and the broader South-East region to dismantle armed criminal networks. Joint teams led by the Department of State Services and military units under Operation Udo Ka recently dismantled several illegal camps in forest enclaves, neutralizing high-profile commanders linked to violent crimes. Concurrently, state authorities in Owerri have begun targeted urban renewal and safety measures around the Imo State University perimeter, executing the demolition of unauthorized structures along campus access roads to improve pedestrian traffic safety, restore urban planning standards, and curb informal commercial security risks. Meanwhile, civil society organizations, including the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, have initiated legal proceedings regarding operational protocols at police detention facilities in the state capital, seeking heightened judicial oversight and human rights compliance as regional security operations continue.
