Peter Obi Criticises Government Over Oyo School Abduction, Says Politicians Are Focused on 2027 Elections

Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the continued captivity of abducted pupils, students, and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, warning that Nigeria’s worsening insecurity requires urgent national attention.

In a statement released on Monday, Obi lamented that more than two weeks after the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, many of the victims remain in captivity despite ongoing rescue efforts. He argued that the prolonged ordeal highlights the country’s deepening security challenges and called for greater urgency in protecting citizens, particularly schoolchildren.  

The former presidential candidate also reflected on the role of political leaders, stating that many politicians, including himself, have become heavily focused on preparations for the 2027 general elections while serious security issues continue to affect ordinary Nigerians. According to him, the safety and welfare of citizens should remain a higher priority than political ambitions.  

Obi’s comments came as teachers across Oyo State embarked on industrial action to protest the continued detention of their abducted colleagues and students. The Nigeria Union of Teachers directed public school teachers in the state to withdraw their services indefinitely until the victims are safely released.  

The Oyo school abduction occurred on May 15 when armed attackers invaded schools in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area. The attack led to the abduction of dozens of pupils, students, and teachers and reportedly resulted in the death of some education workers.  

Earlier, Obi had reacted strongly to reports of the killing of one of the abducted teachers, describing the incident as a reflection of Nigeria’s declining humanity and moral values. He argued that attacks on teachers and schools represent more than a security challenge, calling them a national tragedy that demands accountability and systemic reforms.  

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured affected families that the Federal Government is working closely with Oyo State authorities and security agencies to secure the release of all victims. Additional rescue teams and security personnel have reportedly been deployed to support ongoing operations.  

As rescue efforts continue, families of the abducted victims, community leaders, and education stakeholders have renewed calls for swift government action. Security agencies have maintained that operations remain active and that efforts are ongoing to bring the abducted pupils and teachers home safely.
