 1. Gunmen Kidnap 39 People During Peace Negotiations in Zamfara

A peace meeting intended to end violence in Zamfara State turned into a tragedy when armed bandits abducted 39 participants. The meeting was held in Magamin Diddi community and involved local leaders seeking dialogue with the family of a notorious bandit commander. Instead of reconciliation, the bandit leader reportedly arrived with armed associates and seized 39 of the 47 people present.  

The incident highlights a growing dilemma facing communities in northwestern Nigeria. Many residents, frustrated by years of insecurity and what they perceive as inadequate protection, have resorted to negotiating directly with armed groups. While some local peace deals have temporarily reduced violence, others have collapsed, leading to renewed attacks and kidnappings.  

Security analysts say the abduction demonstrates the risks involved in negotiating with criminal gangs that often view peace talks as opportunities to gain leverage or collect ransom. The attack has renewed calls for stronger security operations and more effective protection for rural communities.  

2. Nigerian Army Rescues 360 Boko Haram Captives

In one of the largest rescue operations of 2026, troops of Operation Hadin Kai freed 360 abducted civilians from Boko Haram captivity in the Mandara Mountains of southern Borno State. The rescued victims included women and children who had been held in remote terrorist camps for months under extremely harsh conditions.  

Military authorities revealed that the operation followed weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance. Special Forces reportedly penetrated terrorist strongholds before ground troops extracted the hostages from heavily fortified locations.  

However, the mission was not without tragedy. Two infants reportedly died from exhaustion due to the difficult terrain and conditions endured during captivity. The remaining victims were transported to secure locations where they received medical treatment, food, and humanitarian assistance.  

The rescue is being celebrated as a significant victory against Boko Haram, though security experts warn that insurgent groups remain active across the Northeast and continue to pose a threat despite military gains.  

3. Oyo School Kidnapping Deepens National Concern

The kidnapping of students and teachers from schools in Oyo State has become one of Nigeria’s most talked-about security stories. Armed attackers reportedly stormed three schools on May 15, abducting more than 30 students and at least one teacher. The attacks marked a disturbing spread of mass kidnappings from northern Nigeria into the Southwest.  

Parents have continued protests and appeals to the government, demanding the safe return of their children. Reports indicate that some teachers were attacked during the incident, with one reportedly killed while trying to escape. The kidnappings have created fear among families and raised serious questions about school security nationwide.  

Security agencies have launched investigations and made some arrests, but many of the abductees remain unaccounted for. The incident has intensified public pressure on federal and state authorities to strengthen intelligence gathering, surveillance, and rapid response capabilities around educational institutions.  

4. Tinubu Under Pressure to Deliver Security Results

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is facing increasing pressure as insecurity remains one of the dominant issues in Nigeria. Although the administration has invested in military operations and intelligence-driven campaigns, recent kidnappings and attacks have fueled criticism from opposition figures, civil society groups, and affected communities.  

Government officials maintain that progress is being made, pointing to successful operations such as the rescue of hundreds of hostages in Borno and the elimination of terrorist fighters during joint military missions. However, critics argue that these victories have not yet translated into a noticeable reduction in kidnappings and criminal attacks across the country.  

With the 2027 election cycle gradually approaching, security is expected to become one of the most important political issues. Citizens are increasingly demanding concrete results, particularly regarding school safety, rural security, and the fight against organized kidnapping networks.
