Chaotic Scenes in Owerri as Empowerment Rally Ends in Scramble

 

OWERRI – A major political sensitization and empowerment rally held at the Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri took an unexpected turn this weekend, as an expectant crowd overwhelmed organizers and carted away various distribution items.

The event was organized by the City Boy Movement (CBM), a prominent support group dedicated to President Bola Tinubu’s "Renewed Hope" agenda. While the rally was intended to be a display of federal support for the South-East, it quickly descended into a "free-for-all" scramble just as the official distribution process was set to begin.

Empowerment Materials Carted Away

Eyewitnesses at the venue reported that the atmosphere shifted from celebration to chaos within minutes. Thousands of attendees, many of whom had traveled from various local government areas across Imo State, surged toward the podium where empowerment tools were stationed.

Items intended for organized distribution—including sewing machines, grinding machines, deep freezers, and laptops—were hauled away by members of the crowd. Security personnel present at the square were unable to contain the surge, leading to several hours of gridlock around the city center.

Political Realignments and Statements

The rally was attended by high-profile figures, including the movement’s National Leader, Seyi Tinubu, and the state coordinator, prominent businessman Pascal Ikechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest.

Speaking during the event, Ikechukwu addressed the crowd regarding the current political landscape, notably stating that his previous support for alternative candidates in the 2023 elections was a "mistake." He pledged total commitment to the current administration, signaling a strategic shift in regional political alliances ahead of future electoral cycles.

Governor Hope Uzodimma, represented by Deputy Governor Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru, reiterated the state’s alignment with the federal government's economic policies. The administration highlighted that despite the disruption, the commitment to grassroots development remains a priority, especially following the signing of the state's N1.44 trillion 2026 budget.

A Sign of Economic Pressures

Political analysts suggest that the desperation witnessed at the square is a reflection of the intense economic pressures currently facing the populace. While the City Boy Movement described the incident as an unfortunate "misunderstanding" during the mobilization process, local observers point to it as a reminder of the logistical challenges inherent in large-scale political distributions.
