Nollywood is in tears Tears, Chair!
Veteran actor, husband, father, and grandfather — Sir Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, the man we all know and love as Olu Jacobs — has gone to rest. He was 84.
The sad news was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in an emotional Instagram post on Wednesday.
In his words:
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.”
He also begged bloggers and online troublemakers to respect the family and give them space to mourn in private.
For those of us who grew up watching NTA and Africa Magic, Olu Jacobs was not just an actor — he was Nollywood itself.
From his early days in London where he trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, to British television, to coming back home to build the Nigerian film industry with his wife Joke Silva, Papa Jacobs gave us everything.
He played the king, the father, the chief, the villain, the pastor — and he played them with that deep, commanding voice that made you sit up straight. Over 120 films, countless stage plays, and awards like the AMVCA Industry Merit Award — he earned it all.
In the last few years, he had been away from the screen, battling ill health. His wife, Aunty Joke Silva, stood by him till the end, showing us what true love looks like.
Since the news broke, President Bola Tinubu, the Actors Guild of Nigeria Lagos chapter, and his colleagues have been paying tribute, calling him a towering figure and a true Lion of African cinema.
He is survived by his beloved wife Joke Silva, his children and grandchildren.
Omo this one pain us.
Rest well, Lion, Rest well Papa. Nollywood will never forget you.
