Oyo School Abduction: Rescue Operations Continue as Authorities Intensify Search for Kidnapped Students and Teachers

More than two weeks after the shocking abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, security agencies have continued intensive efforts to secure the safe release of the victims while investigations into the attack remain ongoing.

The incident, which occurred on May 15, 2026, sent shockwaves across Nigeria after armed attackers invaded schools in the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities, abducting dozens of students, teachers, and school personnel. The attack also resulted in the death of at least one education worker, further deepening concerns about the security of schools across the country.  

According to official reports, the attackers targeted Community Grammar School, L.A. Primary School in Ahoro-Esinle, and Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota during coordinated raids. Security agencies immediately launched search-and-rescue operations, while the Oyo State Government activated emergency security measures to track down the perpetrators.  

Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that several teachers were among those abducted and assured residents that the government would work closely with security agencies to ensure the safe return of every victim. The governor also disclosed that suspects linked to the attack had been arrested and were being interrogated as part of ongoing investigations.  

The attack sparked widespread condemnation from education stakeholders, parents, and civil society groups. Public school teachers in affected communities organized peaceful demonstrations, demanding urgent government intervention and stronger protection for schools. Protesters called for accelerated rescue operations and improved security infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.  

As concern continued to grow nationwide, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, visited the affected communities and ordered intensified rescue operations. The Defence Headquarters has also confirmed that military forces are actively supporting rescue efforts. During a recent operational briefing, military authorities stated that efforts to rescue the abducted students and teachers had been strengthened as part of broader nationwide operations against kidnapping and other criminal activities. Officials noted that troops have recorded significant successes in anti-crime operations across the country and remain committed to ensuring the safe return of the victims.  

In a further demonstration of federal involvement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly approved the deployment of specialized rescue teams and additional security resources to Oyo State. The Federal Government also announced plans to recruit forest guards to strengthen security in vulnerable areas and improve surveillance within forest corridors often used by criminal groups.  

The attack has reignited national conversations about school safety and the growing threat of kidnapping for ransom. While large-scale school abductions have historically been more common in northern Nigeria, the Oyo incident has raised concerns about the spread of such criminal activities into other regions of the country. Security experts have warned that proactive measures, intelligence-led policing, and stronger community engagement will be essential to preventing future attacks on educational institutions.  

Parents of the abducted children have continued to appeal for urgent action, expressing hope that ongoing operations will lead to the safe release of their loved ones. Community leaders have likewise called for calm, urging residents to cooperate with security agencies and avoid spreading unverified information that could hinder rescue efforts.  

As of the latest official updates, authorities have not announced the complete rescue of all abducted students and teachers. Security agencies insist that operations remain active and that every available resource is being deployed to secure the victims’ freedom and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
